Boga lakemarker

Chittagong Hill Tracts

Though Boga lake is beautiful, it is not so much the place itself than it is the journey to get there that is the real attraction. The trip from Bandarban is just stunning and takes you down the Sangu river and through what most be some of the finest hill country. Rolling green hills dotted with tribal villages, sloping fields and the occasional bamboo hut on stilts. The different tribes which inhabit the area are Marma and Bawn people, where the latter lives right at Boga lake. The trip to the lake can be combined with a trek up to the highest mountain/hill in Bangladesh, Mt Keokradang (986m... and not 1230m as stated other places).

For travel information how to get there, check out the photo gallery.

Longest beach in the world (120km)marker

Inani beach, but actually all way from Bakkhali river to Teknaf

It is a bit ironic that the longest beach in the world lies in muslim country where the ladies idea of a beach outfit is a burqa, people swim fully dressed and certainly nobody sun bath. This the-longest-beach-in-the-world beach does not just have one single name, instead every single stretch has a name of its own. The most famous parts are Laboni, also known as Cox's Bazar beach, Himchari, and Inani. The last one being the most charming of them all with local fishermen and boats looking like toy pirate ships. The beach is actually only the longest natural beach in the world, getting beaten badly by Cassino beach in Brazil at 240km long, but for some reason beyond us, Cassino beach does not official count as one unbroken natural beach.

Crater lake of Yeak Lommarker

4km outside Ban Lung

Boeng Yeak Lom is a pristine volcanic crater lake created some 700.000 years ago. It is a popular picnic spot for locals, and a refreshing dip into the clear, warm water can be done from one of the wooden platforms along its shore. The lake has a perfect round shape and though the information sign boost its size to about 800m in diameter and 50m deep it seems smaller. The crater rim is just a lush hill, and not an actually volcanic cone as some might expect. A beautiful forest lake in a very dusty region.

Gangga waterfallsmarker

Lombok

A 7km side tour off the coastal road, on a bumpy dirt road, will bring you to the triple waterfall of Gangga. The size of the waterfalls are not as exciting as getting to them. The first fall is straight forward. The second one is reached by crossing in front of the plunging water of the first and then balancing on some slippery bamboo poles. The last one is the cave waterfall, below to the two others. You have to walk upstream in the riverbed, before you can see the water be pressed out of the cliff face. If the water pressure is low, you can even climb up and explore the crack where the water emerge from.

Gunung Rinjani (3726m)marker

Lombok

The summit of volcano Gunung Rinjani (3726m) is not only the highest point on Lombok, but the second highest volcano in Indonesia (Gunung Kerinci on Sumatra is the highest). Rinjani is active, and so is the smaller and newer volcano, Baru Jari, inside its crater. Beside the new smoking mini cone, the crater also contains a holy lake called Segara Anak. Both the summit of Rinjani and the crater lake is considered sacred by the local Sasak people who scale the mountain as a pilgrim, but anyone is welcome to do the trek when it is considered safe. There are several routes and the treks can be done from 3 days. You can arrange guide, equipment and porters in either Senaru, Sembalun Lawang or Sapit, though Senaru seems as the most popular starting place.

Kelimutu's volcano lakesmarker

Flores

At the summit of volcano Kelimutu (1640m) are three different coloured crater lakes. The colours are slowly changing and are caused by the dissolving of minerals. One of the lake is apparently always turquoise, while the two others can be anything from black, emerald green to chocolate brown or even red – together or separately. Seeing the sunrise from the summit is often hyped as a "most see"-thing and while the first rays of light certainly will bring some warm to the freezing cold, the lakes can be equally enjoyed later in the day when the rays of sun actually reach the surfaces of the lakes.

Mt. Sinabung (2450m)marker

Berastagi, Sumatra

There are two volcanos near Berastagi that can be trekked; Sibayak (2094m) and Sinabung (2450m). The latest being the tallest one with the best view. The start of the trail can be difficult to find, but else fairly easy to follow to the top, where the stunning views are waiting. There are steep sections, where the uses of hands are necessary. The trek can be done in one day from Berastagi town, but remember to get down from the summit in time before dark.

The volcano Fujisan is the icon of Japan and something you have to at least see, but even better hike. Its symmetrical cone is easily visible from Tokyo on a clear day and it's only getting more impressive the closer you get. The trek to the summit is fairly easy (though cold) and there are huts and tea houses along the routes that are open in the season (1st July to 27th August). It's probably the most trekked mountain in the world with more than 200.000 trekkers per year, but it only adds to the pilgrim experience to do it in crowds.

Jordan

Danamarker

Off King's Highway

A bit overhyped, but nevertheless, a lovely and diverse nature reserve with rocky mountain slopes with scrubs and real trees (not something you see much of in Jordan). By staying at the fifteen century ottoman village of Dana right on the edge of the mountain plateau you have a splendid view over the valley. To fully appreciate the reserve you probably need to see and experience it from different angles, whether it's from a trekking trail or from another view point on the mountain ridge.

Wadi Rummarker

About 70 km north of Aqaba

This is a stunning desert setting with red sand dunes and amazing pink rock formations raising straight up from the valley floor. Throw in several sites with ancient rock carvings and a few newer historical sites from the time when the British officer T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia) passed through (in early 20th-century) and you have one of Jordan major attractions. The area is inhabited by friendly Bedouin tribes, who runs the adventure tours into the desert. Most sites can be reached with a four-wheel drive within a full day, but stay overnight at a "Bedouin camp" and enjoy the clearest night sky you might ever experience. If you fancy a camel ride (and a sore bum) or want some trekking add an extra day, the serene scenery only becomes better in a slow pace.
